Kathleen_ArpinKatie Arpin will join Avenues in fall 2015 as an English teacher in the fifth and sixth grades in Middle School. Prior to coming to Avenues, Katie taught seventh grade language arts at Read School in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where she implemented project/inquiry-based learning in the curriculum and delivered data-driven instruction through small groups, co-teaching and the use of technology.

Yumi Nakanishi joined Avenues in summer 2015 as the technology integrator for the Middle School. As technology integrator, Yumi will help define and develop the role of technology in the classroom and provide technical instruction and support to students and faculty in the Middle School.

In fall 2015, Chris Cleaver will move to become a full-time Middle School science teacher. After initially teaching only Upper School science (primarily chemistry), he spent last year teaching both Upper and Middle School science—chemistry and psychology in Upper School and seventh grade science in Middle School.

Lila Pollack joins Avenues in fall 2015 as a part-time strings teacher in the Lower and Middle Schools. She is an accomplished violinist who made her solo debut at eight years old.

Reintroducing Todd Shy

Todd Shy joined Avenues in 2012 as the curriculum specialist for Middle School humanities and as a humanities teacher with a focus on history. In 2014, he became the director of the mastery program, an integral part of the Upper School curriculum. In 2015, he assumes a new role, as curriculum specialist for high intensity practice (HIP) writing in the Middle and Upper Schools.
