Jonathan OliveraJonathan Olivera will join Avenues in fall 2015 as a science teacher in the Middle School. Before joining Avenues, he spent three years teaching sixth-grade biology, seventh-grade chemistry and eighth-grade physical science at George Jackson Academy.

Reintroducing Bridget Ferrick

Bridget FerrickIn fall 2015, Bridget Ferrick will add to her role as Middle School math teacher by becoming a STEAM facilitator for grades five and six. Last year Bridget also oversaw the Middle School minimester program, effectively scheduling and coordinating the 37 different courses offered by 45 teachers during the one-week program.

Read, Eat, Write: The Craft of Food Writing 2015

Students brought in finger food for their class potluck.This year, the “Read, Eat, Write” minimester course combined a love for food and a passion for writing. The objective of the course was to expose students to the different types of writing that could come from a passion about food and to give them an opportunity to try their hand at some of those pieces in a structured writing workshop.

Reintroducing Deborah Dannatt

Deborah DannattIn fall 2015, Deborah Dannatt will become the Middle School curriculum specialist for the humanities, as well as overseeing the Middle School WORLD cohorts. The new schedule for Middle and Upper Schools in the 2015–2016 year is organized around STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) and WORLD (English, history, languages and World Course) components, and different faculty members have been asked to lead the faculty cohorts for each component.

Sally Kent VideoSally Kent joined Avenues in 2012 as the curriculum specialist for science for the Middle and Lower Schools and a Middle School science teacher. As curriculum specialist, she is responsible for mapping, developing and reviewing the science curriculum for grades 1 through 8; teaching; evaluating and coaching science teachers of these grades; and managing the science supplies and budget. In addition, in fall 2015 she will become the Middle School STEAM cohort leader.

Emma CreedenEmma Creeden joins Avenues in fall 2015 as an English teacher in the Middle School. She comes to Avenues from St. Luke’s School in New Canaan, Connecticut, where she began as a teaching fellow before becoming a middle school humanities teacher.

Eva AlavezEva Alavez joins Avenues this fall as a Spanish teacher in the Middle School. She comes to Avenues with over 20 years of experience in Spanish instruction, most recently at the Riverdale Country School in New York where she spent the last year.

Kathleen ArpinKatie Arpin will join Avenues in fall 2015 as an English teacher in the fifth and sixth grades in Middle School. Prior to coming to Avenues, Katie taught seventh grade language arts at Read School in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where she implemented project/inquiry-based learning in the curriculum and delivered data-driven instruction through small groups, co-teaching and the use of technology.

Tiffany ReedyIn fall 2015, Tiffany Reedy will become the head of eighth grade in the Middle School, as well as continuing as a Middle School humanities teacher with a history focus. For the last two years, she has been the head of the sixth grade (2013–2014) and the head of the seventh grade (2014–2015).
